While Singh was in India he was confronted by armed Sikh separatists who demanded food and the use of his jeep. This resulted in the police coming to his house, handcuffing him, and hitting him with a rifle, while asking questions about the militants. When Singh could not provide any information, the police shot him in the leg. The police then brought him to a doctor who bandaged him up. Then the police beat him again and threatened him with death if he did not tell them names of the militants. The police stated “you know the terrorist and you helped them, so let us know their names.” Singh was held by the police for three days until the head of the village gave the police 15,000 rupee, which constituted a bribe not only for Singh’s release, but also to take money from the terrorists.
