PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder is a psychiatric disorder that can occur following the experience or witnessing of life-threatening events such as military combat, natural disasters, terrorist incidents and serious accidents, of physical or sexual assault in adult or childhood. (Nebraska Veterans Affairs, 2007) Typically the symptoms of PTSD include nightmares, flashbacks, difficulty sleeping, a feeling of detachment, and becoming estranged from others. Post –Trauma symptoms typically start within three months of an event.
Post Traumatic Stress disorder can cause not only mental but many physical side effects. Among these effects are stress induced heart attacks, memory and cognition problems, drug abuse, depression and others that are not yet proven. The longer a person with PTSD waits to be treaded the worse the problems become.
