The reconstruction of the South according to Columbian historian Eric Foner(2008), “Even though Reconstruction failed to meet goals of the Radical Republicans, painlessly rebuild the South, and give the freed blacks complete rights, Reconstruction did give African Americans new chances and brief taste of a free society (Reconstruction, 2008).  When public schools were instituted; blacks became citizens and some whites even offered support with the civil rights movement.  Freed blacks were given opportunities that were met with so much opposition and as a result, more could have been done.
