I do not feel empowered in my professional life at all. As a police officer I find that I am a second class citizen and am always wrong until I prove myself right. I also do not get some of the same Constitutional protections that I am sworn to protect, which I also feel is unfair. For instance the Fifth Amendment states that a person has a right to remain silent and make no statements against their interest without having the opportunity to speak with an attorney (paraphrasing). Yet if I am subject to an internal investigation I do not have this right the only thing is they can not use it against me in a criminal trial. Do not get me wrong, the pay and benefits are excellent and I have too many years here to leave so I CHOOSE to stay. However had I known what I know now, I would have found another occupation.
