Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor

The chosen selection was Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor. Frederic Chopin compiled this selection in 1838-1839 (Kamien, 2011). There are six elements found within music: sound, rhythm, melody, harmony, tonality, and texture. Although these are all found within Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor, specifically two will be highlighted to break down the selection more thoroughly. In Chopin’s Prelude in E Minor, the two following elements play a very important role: the harmony and the melody. These two elements will allow for a personal interpretation along with the knowledge of why the selection was composed to begin with. There are assumptions that relate the selection to Chopin’s love life and the devastating break up with a lover.
