Introduction

            Riordan Manufacturing is a global plastics manufacturing company. They now have production facilities located in Georgia, Michigan, and China; however, the headquarters are based in California. The company started as Riordan Plastics, Inc. in 1991 by founder Dr. Riordan, but is now wholly owned by Riordan Industries. (Apollo Group, Inc., 2015) The company is stable, but there are opportunities to leverage metric and lean production principles to improve performance. These steps will position the company to remain viable into the future.

Manufacturing Strategy

According to Jacobs & Chase (2011), a Chase strategy matches the production rate to the order rate by hiring and laying off employees as the order rate varies. Riordan’s manufacturing supply chain plant in Hangzhou, China operates as a decentralized unit of Riordan Manufacturing. Riordan utilizes the Chase strategy to provide a particular consumer base with customized made-to-order fans.
