Early Northern and Southern Colonies

The Northern Colonies were seeking freedom of religion and wanted to escape from being persecuted due to their religious beliefs.

The Southern Colonies were solely interested in making money which was largely possible due to their political belief in slavery.

Africans were treated better than in the South. Though still working for the whites in the home their lives were difficult but manageable.

Slavery was widespread. Slaves did all the farming for plantations and lived lives of suffering while the plantation owners were well off.
