WHAT I NEED: A COMPLETED LAB REPORT AND LAB NOTES

HERE IS MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE LAB:

For this lab we will be using 2 separate websites to help us.  The first is www.firearmsid.com and the other is http://forensics.rice.edu.  You need to start with firearmsid.org, as that website is full of very important information.  The firearmsid.org website is free and it was developed by a firearms examiner. You will need to register there, as you will eventually be performing your cartridge casing experiment at that site.  To register for my classroom, you need to go to: http://www.firearmsid.com/classroom/class_login.htm.  The Log-in Key is: C28673CCJS301Fall13.  Once you’re in there, you need to read, under “Main Pages” (see the table of contents list on the left side of the page) the Introduction section and all of the pages under the “Firearm Identification” section.  You are welcome to read anything else on this website, but you are only required to read those parts.

For the Laboratory Exercises, you have one (1) bullet and one (1) cartridge casing to examine.  You have 2 choices for the bullet examination:

The Easy Option: go to http://forensics.rice.edu.  Yes, I know it is a CSI site.  And, yes, I know I don’t like CSI.  But, this website is actually pretty good and has good information.  Once you reach the site, click on “Case One: Rookie Training.”  You can register if you want to, but you are more than welcome to play as a guest.  Then, click on “Firearms and Toolmarks.”  Go through the entire Lab, until you match the firearm.  And, yes, lastly, of course you doneed to take Notes as you proceed through this Lab Exercise.  If you choose this option, you need to use "301 Lab 4 Analysis Request 1" for your experiment.

The DIFFICULT Option: And, when I say difficult, I mean really, really difficult.  Like, throw your computer out of the window difficult.  I warned you! Go back to http://www.firearmsid.com.  In the table of contents, click on “Resource Area” then “Virtual Comparison Microscope” then “Bullet VCM.”  Read through the entire page (trust me, this is difficult enough, but if you do not read this introductory page it will make it that much more difficult)!  Once you have read the entire page, then go back up to the top of the page and click on “Test 1.”  You then need to compare only ONE bullet in that test. Yes, only ONE bullet.  Yes, I know there are 4 unknowns on that page, but you only need to compare 1 of them.  And, when you are ready to throw your computer out the window (and, yes, it will happen) walk away and start another day.  And, yes, lastly, of course you do need to take Notes as you proceed through this Lab Exercise.  If you choose this option, you need to use "301 Lab 4 Analysis Request 2" for your experiment.

For your Cartridge Casing comparison, you will have the use the Virtual Comparison Microscope area at http://www.firearmsid.com.  This time, click on “Resource Area” then “Virtual Comparison Microscope” then “Cartridge Casing VCM.”  Read through the entire page (trust me, this is difficult enough, but if you do not read this introductory page it will make it that much more difficult)!  Once you have read the entire page, then go back up to the top of the page and click on “Test 1.” You only need to compare ONE cartridge casing. Yes, I know there are 8 unknowns in that test.  You really only need to compare 1 of them!  And, once again, lastly, of course you do need to take Notes as you proceed through this Lab Exercise.

You can find your Laboratory Requests for Examinations (both 1 & 2) in this Weeks 6 & & Readings and Information section as well as another Blank Lab Report Template.
